TRELLECH UNITED ANNUAL TALK & SUPPER
Merry Christmas & Thank You for Your Support in 2015
On 30th October we were fortunate to have the former Governor of Belmarsh Prison, penal expert and consultant, Mr. Geoffrey Hughes as guest speaker for our annual fundraising ‘talk & supper‘.
Geoff Hughes and his wife Sue were guests of local Conservative branch chairman, residents of Trellech United and wider Monmouthshire at its annual event.
The talk was open to everyone, and guests included MP for Monmouth David Davies; AM for Monmouth Nick Ramsay; supported by Monmouthshire Councillors, Deputy Leader Cllr. Bob Greenland, Cllr. Penny Jones and Cllr. Phil Murphy; in addition to friends, branch members, Monmouthshire residents, and people of all political persuasions.
Everyone had gathered at the Babington Centre (Trellech Village Hall) to hear local man Geoff deliver his talk. He certainly lived up to his reputation of being a larger than life character, and gave a most informative, amusing, thought-provoking and moving account of his remarkable career in the Prison Service, which is something we would all expect from someone who is at the top of his profession. Afterwards, the floor was opened for questions and Geoff eagerly answered questions on his career and his views on current UK and foreign penal systems.
Supper was served, which to the delight of guests was local chef Sue Flower’s Babington ‘Marcher Chicken’ – chicken breast in a creamy ham and mushroom sauce with Pineau des Charentes; baked whole salmon with lemon and spinach; mushrooms stuffed with spelt risotto, served with roasted roots, Mediterranean vegetables, new potatoes and mash. This was followed by apple and blackberry crumble, lemon banoffee pie and Eton mess (incidentally some of Margaret Thatcher’s favourites in among those puddings), and cheeseboard. We certainly look after you in Trellech!
The customary raffle was drawn and in addition to a limited edition Help for Heroes bottle of Bell’s blended Scotch whisky, there was also a bottle of House of Commons Merlot signed by the Prime Minister, Rt Hon David Cameron MP (we must be giving him writer’s cramp by now), and a box of House of Commons handmade Champagne truffles. Congratulations to all the winners, including Miss Jennifer Davidson, winner of the truffles who just so happened to be fairly recently engaged to our very own candidate in the upcoming 2016 Assembly election, Nick Ramsay. Congratulations to you both on behalf of the branch.
The Trellech United branch would like to formally thank Geoff Hughes for giving up his time to give a talk to the branch and community; The Babington Centre (Trellech Village Hall) for hosting; Peter & Sue Flower for providing the sumptuous supper and manning the bar; Nassim & Peggy Hilu for their support on the evening; branch committee members for their raffle donations; and last but not least, to all those members and residents in the community who attended and made all of this worthwhile, which in turn gives us the opportunity to hold similar community-based events in the future.
Thanks again to all those who attended, and who gave generously and supported our ‘talk & supper’.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas, and a prosperous 2016.
